According to Feng Yaoxiang, the Chinese government confirmed to participate in Expo 2020 Dubai in January, 2017. China and the UAE officially signed the participation contract in May, 2018. China appointed CCPIT Vice Chairman Zhang Shenfeng as the chief representative of the China Pavilion at the Expo. CCPIT, responsible for work related to Bureau of International Expositions and world expo, formed the China pavilion organizing committee together with the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Publicity Department of CPC Central Committee, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Commerce to be in charge of the organization, coordination, preparation and management related work about China’s participation into the expo.

Feng said, the China Pavilion at this expo will be themed “Building the Community of Common Destiny-Innovation and Opportunity”. The China Pavilion will be a 4, 636 m2 self-built pavilion, one of the largest at the expo. The pavilion is named “Light of China”, signifying hope and light. The building is designed in the principle of “featuring Chinese style, combining western style and integrating ancient and modern elements”. The Chinese elements and modern technology are combined in an ingenious way. The exterior of the building is in the shape of a lantern and in a modern architectural style. It is magnificent in outer appearance, elegant and majestic. Lantern stands for light, union, auspiciousness and happiness, symbolizing that all countries gather on the platform of the expo to pursue prosperity and development as well as build the community of shared destiny and a big happy family.

Feng Yaoxiang also introduced the three highlights of the China’s participation into the Dubai Expo: First, innovation in theme. The China Pavilion takes "Building the Community of Common Destiny-Innovation and Opportunity" as the theme. Revolving around the key word "innovation", innovation driven by science and technology as well as system and mechanism will be promoted to push for common development and implement the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda and build the community of shared destiny. Second, innovation in architecture. The building of the China Pavilion is a combination of Chinese traditional elements, modern architectural ideas and modern technologies, embodying the Chinese spirit and the characteristics of the times, demonstrating the self-confidence of Chinese culture and telling a Chinese story well in the international context. Environmentally-friendly materials are used in the exterior of the building, showing the Chinese culture with modern technologies. Through innovative multimedia technology, the lighting show at the China Pavilion during the night will make a beautiful scene in the Expo Park. Third, innovation in demonstration. The China Pavilion will highlight China's innovative scientific and technological achievements in the fields of information, technology and transportation, etc., in new and high technologies. "SkyEye" FAST, Beidou satellite, 5G technology, artificial intelligence, etc. as the core exhibits will be displayed at the Expo China Pavilion for the first time. High-speed rail simulation driving and intelligent connected car, etc. will also debut at the expo to show "smart travelling” in a novel way.

There are two types of expo, registered expo and recognized expo.
